There isn’t one single reason why dental implants fail, which is why simply replacing an implant without understanding the cause isn’t enough.
An implant may not integrate successfully with the bone during healing. Problems can also develop later due to inflammation around the implant, changes to the supporting bone, excessive forces or issues with the replacement teeth.
We look at the implant, surrounding gum and bone, your bite and the teeth it supports to understand the bigger picture. Where appropriate, 3D imaging gives us a detailed view of the area and helps us plan what happens next.
Finding out that an implant has failed can be particularly frustrating when you’ve already invested time and money in treatment. But it doesn’t automatically mean you can’t have another implant.
Some problems can be treated while the implant remains in place. If an implant cannot be predictably saved, it may need to be removed and the area treated before a replacement is considered.
What matters is that the next treatment plan takes account of why the original implant failed, rather than simply repeating the same approach.
Bone loss around a failed implant doesn’t automatically rule out further implant treatment.
We assess the bone that remains and plan around what is actually there. Implant size and position can be adapted and, where necessary, bone grafting can be used to provide additional support.
Your 3D scan allows us to see the bone available and establish what would be needed in your individual case.
You don’t need to return to the dentist who originally placed your implant before coming to see us.
If you’re concerned about an implant placed elsewhere, have been told it is failing or simply want another opinion before committing to further treatment, we can assess the situation independently and discuss your options.
If you have information about your previous implant treatment, bring it with you if you can. Don’t worry if you don’t have the original records, though. We can still start by assessing what’s happening now.
If something has changed with an existing implant, the first step is finding out exactly what is happening.
Your £79 implant consultation gives us the opportunity to assess the implant and the tissues around it before explaining whether it can be treated, needs replacing or requires a
different approach.

There can be several causes. An implant may not integrate successfully during healing, or problems can develop later involving the gum, supporting bone, bite or replacement teeth. An assessment is needed to establish the cause.
Not necessarily. Whether an implant can be treated and retained depends on the nature of the problem, its stability and the health of the tissues around it.
In some cases, yes. If an implant needs to be removed, we’ll assess the remaining bone and the reason for the original failure before deciding whether another implant can be placed.
Yes. We can assess an implant even if your original treatment was carried out elsewhere.
