Dental implants are placed into the jaw to create secure anchor points for the denture.
Rather than simply resting on the gums, the denture connects to the implants to hold it more firmly in position. You can still remove it yourself for cleaning, but when it is in place, it has much greater stability than a conventional removable denture.
You don’t need an implant for every missing tooth. The number and position of implants are carefully planned according to the denture they need to support and your individual mouth.
The biggest change is often simply having to think about your dentures less.
A more stable denture can give you greater security when you bite and chew, make speaking and laughing feel less inhibited and reduce the worry that your teeth might move at the wrong moment.
For someone who is otherwise comfortable with removable dentures, implant retention can offer a useful middle ground: you keep the practicality of a removable denture, but gain the additional stability provided by dental implants.
Implant treatment at Broad Street isn’t planned by looking at the bone and simply asking where an implant will fit. We start with the result we want to create.
Pre-treatment photographs allow us to plan the smile first, considering the position, appearance and function of the finished teeth. Digital scans and 3D imaging then help us plan where the implants should be positioned to support that result.
It’s something many patients assume, particularly after wearing dentures or living with missing teeth for a long time. But having less bone than you once did doesn’t necessarily mean implants aren’t possible.
Implant size and position can be tailored to the bone available and, where necessary, bone grafting can be used to create or preserve the support needed around an implant.
Bone grafting can also sound like a much bigger procedure than it necessarily is. In many cases, it can be carried out at the same time as implant placement, using a bone substitute material around the implant to support healing.
Your 3D scan allows us to see how much bone is actually available and plan accordingly, rather than ruling out implants based on an assumption.
Both options use dental implants for support, but there is an important difference.
Implant-retained dentures are removable. They connect securely to implants when worn but are taken out for cleaning.
Fixed implant teeth stay in place. Treatments such as All-on-4 and All-on-6 use implants to support a fixed bridge of replacement teeth that you don’t remove yourself.
If you’re happy with the idea of a removable denture but want it to feel much more secure, implant retention may be the more appropriate route. If your aim is to move away from removable teeth altogether, we can also discuss fixed alternatives.
If loose dentures are starting to dictate what you eat, how you speak or how comfortable you feel around other people, you don’t necessarily have to accept that as part of wearing dentures.
Your £79 implant consultation allows us to assess why your denture is moving, look at the bone available and discuss whether implants could provide the additional stability you’re looking for.
Implant consultation: £79
Yes. Implant-retained dentures are designed to be removable, allowing you to take them out for cleaning. The difference is that they connect securely to dental implants while you are wearing them.
That will depend on your existing denture and the treatment being planned. We’ll assess its fit, condition and suitability as part of your consultation and explain whether a new denture is recommended.
Having reduced bone does not automatically rule out dental implants. We use 3D imaging to assess the available bone and can consider implant size, positioning and bone grafting where appropriate.
Potentially. If you would prefer replacement teeth that you don’t have to remove yourself, treatments such as All-on-4 or All-on-6 may be worth exploring. Your consultation allows us to compare the options that are actually suitable for your mouth.
